"The Wolves" a Stunning New Show
The Wolves is a whirlwind of a show that obeys no theatrical formula and keeps the audience guessing about what will happen next. The energy that drives the production, both as written and as performed, is young, ferocious, and female. (The name of the team is no accident.) These girls are quick to jump on any sign of weakness, in a constant struggle for dominance within the pack that is broken by sudden and startling displays of compassion.
We get to know the Wolves in a series of pre-game warmup sessions, and as the rapid-fire dialogue rockets around the room, their varying personalities emerge: the shy outsider, the wild child, the team captain who struggles to contain the girls’ frantic energy. Their delivery of the fast-paced overlapping dialogue, as they stretch and perform their ritualized warmup exercises, is a theatrical tour de force, but the stunning display of technique is not the point — it’s the engine of a drama unlike any you have seen.
