Perusal scripts are available upon request. Please dress appropriately for dance auditions. Performance run commitment is September 7–30, 2018 with possible extensions Oct. 5-7. Rehearsals begin July 9.
“The Wiz,”with music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls and book by William F. Brown, is a retelling of L. Frank Baum's classic 1900 children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in the context of modern African-American culture. A popular film version starring Michael Jackson and Diana Ross was released in 1978. Songs from the show include “Ease On Down the Road,”, “Home,” “Slide Some Oil To Me,” and “If You Believe.” “The Wiz” has special meaning to both the foundation and to former students of Ron Bright. Ever since he directed the show in 1985, the song “If You Believe” became his theme. The lyrics encapsulate his approach to teaching, and to life. The production team includes Mary Chesnut Hicks (director), Clarke Bright (music director) and Marcelo Pacleb (choreographer).
The I’m A Bright Kid Foundation is a 501©3 organization formed in 2015 by Ron Bright’s former students. The mission of the foundation is to support the educational endeavors of those that are inspired to teach, and to ensure that his gift of live theater continues to thrive in our community.
