"Accidental Death of An Anarchist" to Open Collegiate Theatre Festival
Fourth Annual Chaminade University Collegiate Theatre Festival
June 22 through July 22 -
HONOLULU – June 1, 2018 – The Performing Arts Department of Chaminade University will present the Chaminade University Collegiate Theatre Festival June 22 through July 2018 at the Loo Theatre, 3140 Waialae Avenue, Honolulu, Hawaii 96816. The festival is a summer theatre program featuring student producers, directors, actors, designers and technicians. How can an individual wage vendetta against the corrupt powers they face? How frustrated must that individual be to risk their own livelihood to attack those powers? How entertaining can it be to witness these fits of rage on stage? This year’s Chaminade University Collegiate Theatre Festival addresses these questions with their two shows: Dario Fo’s Accidental Death of an Anarchist and Theresa Rebeck’s Dead Accounts. Accidental Death of an Anarchist explores police corruption in Italy in the 1970’s and one Maniac’s outrageous attempt to expose it. Dead Accounts shows what happens when a typical Mid-Western guy named Jack can’t endure faceless Wall Street any longer and feels the need for payback. While their actions may be questionable, at a time when the actions of one individual may feel futile, the Maniac and Jack can give us a cathartic release of frustration toward similar powers we face today.
Accidental Death of an Anarchist, written by Italian playwright and activist Dario Fo, was first produced in 1970, is a sharp and hilarious satire on police corruption. Chaminade’s production will be directed by UHM graduate student, Christine Lamborn. Based on a real case, Fo tells the story of the anarchist railway worker who, in 1969, 'fell' to his death from a police headquarters window. It is a piece in which his skill at writing farce and his gifts as a clown brilliantly serve his politics, playing on the tensions between the death of the prisoner and the farcical interventions of the authorities to explain it. The similarities to Hawaii’s current police corruption investigations seem to resonate through this theatrical lens with unique self-awareness. Accidental Death of an Anarchist will open the festival and be presented on June 22 - 23 and 28 - 30 at 7:30pm, June 24 and July 1 at 4:00pm at the Loo Theatre. Thursday June 28 is a “pay what you can” performance.
