Reiko Ho Directs the Hawai‘i Premiere of Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven

Young Jean Lee’s In-your-face Script Continues EVOLVE’s Inaugural Season

(Honolulu, HI)

EVOLVE Theatre Company is proud to present the Hawai‘i premiere of Young Jean Lee’s Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven, directed by top O‘ahu director Reiko Ho. Ho, who first reached island-wide fame by helming in 1999 and 2009 the quintessential Asian American female play, Susan Kim’s The Joy Luck Club, based off Amy Tan’s bestselling novel of the same name, returns with an irreverent, intelligent, bold, and brash new look at the Asian American experience. Accomplished in staging challenging cultural works, recent directorial projects by Ho include the world premiere of Lee Tonouchi’s UchinaAloha, The Tales of Hoffmann for Hawaii Opera Theatre, Patient by Israeli playwright Tali Ariav, and collaborations with acclaimed Filipino playwright, poet, and author, R. Zamora Linmark.

With Ho taking on Lee’s hilarious and hard-hitting script, this production is sure to be one of the hottest tickets of the spring theatre season.

“Playwright Young Jean Lee’s worst nightmare was to make a predictable, confessional Korean-American identity play with a flowery Asian-sounding title. So that’s exactly what she did. Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven follows a character named “Korean-American” as she navigates the increasingly disturbing levels of a pseudo-Korean world like a contestant in an identity-politics video game. "Have you ever noticed how most Asian Americans are slightly brain-damaged from having grown up with Asian parents?" begins Korean-American, protagonist of Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven by Lee, whose explorations of stereotypes of race, gender, and religion are unflinching— and seat-squirming funny.”–www.youngjeanlee.org“

Scathingly mischievous...Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heavenis a provocateur'sfunny, guns-blazing take on the utter banality of ethnic stereotypes and other cross-cultural outrages. In its slyly eccentric way, it's an evening of enlightenment.”–Peter Marks, Washington Post

“Part performance art, part comic sketches, fights, dance, song and ‘reverse Bible study,’ and at times strangely serious, Dragons is a bracingly funny...always provocative equal-opportunity offender.” –Robert Hurwitt, San Francisco Gate

“Miss Lee has a talent for evocative and sometimes grotesque imagery, and on the attack she is at the height of her powers.” –New York Times
