A Great Local Showcase

A Great Local Showcase

Love Local Style, 12 mostly original short plays by local playwrights was a hilarious, rollicking production.

A simple set of two tables, a few chairs, a flown in tombstone, and creative use of projections allowed twelve different locations to play before the audience.

Lee Tonouchi's Da Magic Bracelet and I Wen Take Oral Communications Online (from Echoes of Dat Red Guitar) were comedic masterpieces.  Lee Cataluna's scenes (from Flowers of Hawaii) were gut-wrenching and profound.  Ryan Okinaka's Adventures of Kaika Boy and Molepo Gurl was extremely moving (following a grandson playing imaginary games with his grandmother who has dementia.)

New writing from up and coming Noa Helela was witty and character-driven.  Eric Yokomori is an Absurdist genius.  The costumes were obviously thrown together but lively "cheesy" music accompanied the scenes.  Director Taurie Kinoshita did a brilliant job of directing the talented cast.  Stand-out performances from Ashley Shankles, Alaka'i Cunningham, Jessica Jusseaume, Mikie Davidson and Jae An.  The other terrific actors were Jeremy Whipple, William Philippus, Darla Richards, Likeke Nakachi-Isaacs, Jason Cavinder, Noah Schuetz, Michael Wall and Daphnei Hussein, who all performed with clarity and commitment.

This production was a great night out and it was wonderful to see local writing onstage.
