EPOCH Presents Inaugural Show The Motherfucker with the Hat

Provocatively titled-show kicks off new theatre company with a bang

(Honolulu, HI)—Empowering People of Color Hawai‘i (EPOCH) is proud to present its inaugural production, Stephen Adly Guirgis’ 2011 Tony Award-nominated The Motherfucker with the Hat. Po‘okela Award-winning actor/director Troy M. Apostol helms this “high-octane verbal cage match about love, fidelity and misplaced haberdashery” after first staging it in December 2015 for select Hawaii Pacific University audiences, as part of Kumu Kahua Theatre’s Dark Night series. This version marks EPOCH’s debut onto the Hawai‘i theatre scene, and promises to be an intense foray into sexy, dangerous, and hilarious Nuyorican territory.

“EPOCH aims to empower by telling POC stories one might not see at other Hawai‘i theatres, and this play is certainly a risky move for our first outing. Don’t let the title fool you. As Guirgis states, “…the opposite of love is indifference, not hate… [These characters] love and need each other far more than they hate or are indifferent to one another…” Heartbreaking things happen in this play. Self-destructive behavior is rampant. And Puerto Rican or not, New Yorker or not, we’ve all been there—cycles of self-sabotage, toxic relationships, etc. It takes courage to change. This play has a strong moral message about choosing to be the good and upstanding person you want to be. This play has a lot of heart, it has a lot of love.” --Troy M. Apostol

“Struggles with addiction, friendship, love, and the challenges of adulthood are at the center of the story. Jackie, a petty drug dealer, is just out of prison and trying to stay clean. He's also still in love with his coke-addicted childhood sweetheart, Veronica. Ralph D. is Jackie's too-smooth, slightly slippery sponsor. He's married to the bitter and disaffected Victoria, who, by the way, has the hots for Jackie. And then there's Julio, Jackie's cousin…a stand-up, "stand by me" kind of guy.” -- Dramatists Play Service

Don’t miss The Motherfucker with the Hat! Playing for two weekends only, staring some of Hawai‘i hottest talents of stage and screen: Jason Quinn (The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, Waikiki the Film) as Jackie, Danielle Zalopany (Not One Batu, Waikiki the Film) as Veronica, Quantae Love (Ruined, Popolo) as Ralph D., Wendy Pearson (Yellowman, Hawaii 5-O) as Victoria, reprising his role, Kava Jones (Julius Caesar, Waikiki the Film) as Cousin Julio, and assisted directed by recent Sarah Lawrence College (NY) graduate, Sienna Aczon (The Tempest), this show is guaranteed to seduce and satiate the adventurous theatregoer in you, and knock you out like a bat to the head.
