July 21 - 30, 2017
July 21, 22, 28, 29 at 7:30pm, and July 23 and 30 at 4pm
The Performing Arts Department of Chaminade University will present the Chaminade University Collegiate Theatre Festival July 21 through August 20, 2017 at the Richard T Mamiya Theatre and Loo Theatre, 3140 Waialae Avenue, Honolulu, Hawaii 96816. The festival is a summer theatre program featuring student producers, directors, actors, designers and technicians. This year’s theme is Women in Theatre featuring three plays: Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992, The Virture In Propaganda and Nā Kau A Hiʻiaka. All three plays were written by women exploring culturally diverse historical events from a female prospective. Chaminade is also featuring female students in every level of the production team.
The Tony Award nominated play, Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 written by Anna Deavere Smith is a compilation of monologues created from over 300 interviews during the aftermath of the 1992 Los Angeles riots. It was originally performed by Anna Deavere Smith as a one-woman show. Chaminade’s production, directed by UHM graduate student, Anna Hamaguchi will feature seven actors portraying multiple characters. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the LA riots which were sparked by the brutal police beating of Rodney King and the subsequent acquittal of the police officers involved. This piece of verbatim theatre explores multiple perspectives on the continuously current theme of police brutality and racism. Reflecting on the LA riots 25 years ago brings us to the present Black Lives Matter movement as a result of the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner among others. Twilight: Los Angeles 1992 will open the festival and be presented on July 21st – 22nd and 28th - 29th at 7:30 p.m., 23rd and 30th at 4pm at the Loo Theatre
