Hawaii Shakes 2017: Festival-Within-A-Festival

The Hawaii Shakespeare Festival (HSF) celebrates its sixteenth season with a festival-within-a-festival at the newly remodeled The ARTS at Marks Garage. The season kicks off with two of Shakespeare’s most accessible plays, Romeo and Juliet, opening July 14, and Comedy of Errors, opening July 28, and concludes with a Chekhov mini-festival featuring Seagull, Bear and Avenger, opening August 11. Bear and Avenger will be free and open to the public.

Rob Duval directs the “age-appropriate” season opener Romeo and Juliet with talented teenage leads Ari Dalbert as Romeo and Alisa Boland as Juliet, and HSF veterans Troy Apostol and Katherine Aumer as Lord and Lady Capulet. Duval, who previously directed Cymbeline for HSF in 2012, promises romance and tragedy tinged with broad physical comedy and rousing sword fights.

UH Manoa MFA alum Shirley Kagan returns after twenty years as a theatre educator and director on the mainland to guest direct Comedy of Errors, Shakespeare's shortest and silliest play of lost twins and mistaken identity. Kagan sets the mayhem in "the bustling din of 1920s Ephesus (which looks a lot like New York)." Comedy stars Connor Lawhorn  and Dan Connell as Antipholus of Ephesus and Syracuse, with Nygell Halvorson and Kirk Lapilio as the twin Dromios.

The 2017 season concludes with a Chekhov mini-festival, headlined by Seagull, Chekhov’s masterpiece of love, innocence, betrayal, and the price of pursuing an artistic life. Seagull stars Nick Amador as Konstantin, Olga Kalashnikova as the star-struck Nina, Stacy Ray as Irina and Alex Monti Fox as Trigorin. Seagull is directed by Tony Pisculli and presented in a new translation by Tony Pisculli and Olga Kalashnikova. Two comedic Chekhov shorts will be presented one hour beforehand and are free and open to the public: Avenger, an original adaptation from the short story of the same name, and Bear, "a joke in one-act."
