Hawaii Opera Theatre is very proud of its track record in bringing internationally renowned singers and productions to Hawaii and this season has certainly continued that great tradition.
Our performances of Puccini’s gorgeous La Bohème, Andre Previn’s powerful adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire, Jake Heggie’s Three Decembers and Offenbach’s great masterpiece, The Tales of Hoffmann have entertained and moved our audiences, and featured artists of the caliber of Frederica von Stade. We also took opera to the islands of Maui, Kauai and the Big Island for the first time in the company’s history.
And our Education Department has continued its award-winning work with over 22,000 children across the islands, including our Opera Express tour of over 80 performances of Hansel and Gretel on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island, and Opera Residency productions in Waimanalo, Aiea, Waikele and Niu Valley. Many of the schools HOT visits have no music program of their own.
And this is also the end of an era for Hawaii Opera Theatre, with the retirement of our beloved Artistic Director, Henry Akina. Over the past twenty years Henry has built HOT into a world-class company, introducing new repertoire, and building our education program to be a major force in arts education in the islands. We hope that you will join us in wishing him a long and happy retirement.
