A Question of Life and Death

Late Night Presents its Season Finale

The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa’s Department of Theatre + Dance is proud to continue its 2016/17 Late Night series with the Pulitzer Prize winning and Tony Award nominated ‘Night, Mother by Marsha Norman. Directed by graduate student Laura Clark-Greaver, and performed by Anna Klein Hamaguchi and Sharon Garcia Doyle. Performances will take place April 19th and 20th at 9pm, and April 21st and 22nd at 11pm in Studio S within Kennedy Theatre.

Playwright Marsha Norman explains: “the things we women know best have not been perceived to be of critical value to society. The mother-daughter relationship is a perfect example of that.” ‘Night Mother is a story about a mother and her daughter, about taking control of one’s life in the face of isolation and despair. The play opens on just another Saturday night in the home of Jessie and Thelma. Faced with the perception that her life no longer has significant meaning, Jessie has decided to kill herself, and makes her intentions clear to her mother, Thelma. Will she or won’t she end her life? And why? Suspense builds as Thelma desperately tries to alter her daughter’s plans.

Marsha Norman wrote ‘Night Mother in 1983 with revisions for its Broadway remount in 2004. She later won a Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for her book for the Broadway musical, The Secret Garden and a Tony nomination for The Color Purple.  Director, Clark-Greaver sets ‘Night Mother in modern day Hawai’i in a small homey studio space.  Anna Klein Hamaguchi, recently seen this season as Antigone in Antigone, and Viola in Twelfth Night, takes on the role of Jessie. While Sharon Garcia Doyle, multiple Po’okela award winner and frequently seen in the Hawaii Shakespeare Festival, portrays Thelma.

Tickets to ‘Night, Mother will go on sale at the Kennedy Theatre Box Office one hour prior to the start of the show.
