Inspired by Edward Snowden’s NSA revelations, this production explores the question of how the age of social media and a culture of surveillance have changed our everyday behavior and interactions. This premiere is Kennedy Theatre’s first staging of a faculty-directed “Devised Theatre” piece, a style of theatre production that is collectively created “from scratch.”

ICS Speaker Series: "A Conversation with the ACLU's Ben Wizner" (moderator: Markus Wessendorf)
Ben Wizner and Markus Wessendorf will discuss the reasons for the rise of Trump and the upcoming challenges of the ACLU.

3/16 at 6:30pm at Kennedy Theatre:
Pre-show talk: Markus Wessendorf (Theatre and Dance/UHM) on "The Devising Process of Smile, You're Under Surveillance!"
Project initiator and production dramaturg Markus Wessendorf will tell the story of how Smile,You're Under Surveillance! came into being, what inspired it, and which challenges the creators of this show faced during its production process.

3/17 at 6:30pm at Kennedy Theatre:
Pre-show talk: Ben Wizner (Edward Snowden's ACLU lawyer) on "The Future of the ACLU under Trump" (Kennedy Theatre)
This preshow talk provides a larger political context for the devised theatre production Smile, You're Under Surveillance! (Kennedy Theatre, 7:30pm). Ben Wizner will discuss the challenges that the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is likely going to face under the Trump administration.

Pre-show panel: "Surveillance, Snowden, and the Age of Trump" (with Suzanna Reiss, Michael Shapiro, Ben Wizner, and Markus Wessendorf)
This pre-show panel provides a larger political context for the devised theatre production Smile, You're Under Surveillance! (Kennedy Theatre, 7:30pm). Suzanna Reiss (History/UHM), Michael Shapiro (Political Science/UHM), and Ben Wizner (Edward Snowden's ACLU lawyer) will discuss in which direction the Trump administration will likely take the surveillance state and how this will affect whistle-blowers, civil rights organizations, and the concerned citizenry. Markus Wessendorf (Theatre & Dance/UHM) will moderate the panel.

3/22 at 12:00pm at Burns Hall 2118:
ICS Speaker Series: James Harding on "The Invisible Vanguard: Reflections on Political Movements and Contemporary Avant-Garde Formations."
James Harding (Theatre, Dance & Performance Studies/University of Maryland) will address the social and political phenomenon of social invisibility, specially with regard to Undocumented Workers and Refugees. It is part of a larger research project that deals with the conceptualization of contemporary notions of vanguardism. The frame for the talk is an opening reflection on Duchamp and a closing section on the Electronic Disturbance Theatre.

Pre-show talk: Elise Morrison (Texas A&M) on "Surveillance Culture and Feminist Performance"
This preshow talk introduces key aspects of the devised theatre production Smile, You're Under Surveillance! (Kennedy Theatre, 7:30pm). Elise Morrison (Dept. of Performance Studies/Texas A&M), author of "Discipline and Desire: Surveillance Technologies in Performance" (University of Michigan Press, 2016), will discuss recent attempts in theatre and performance to engage with the culture of surveillance from a feminist perspective.

3/25 at 6:30pm at Kennedy Theatre:
Pre-show talk: James Harding (University of Maryland) on "Performance Activism in the Age of Surveillance"
This preshow talk introduces key aspects of the devised theatre production Smile, You're Under Surveillance! (Kennedy Theatre, 7:30pm). James Harding (Theatre, Dance & Performance Studies/University of Maryland), author of the forthcoming book "Performance, Transparency, and the Cultures of Surveillance," will discuss the indispensable prerequisites for an effective performance activism against a society that is increasingly structured by the tools, mechanisms, and technologies of surveillance.

3/26 at 12:00pm at Kennedy Theatre:
Pre-show panel: "Performance, Activism and Surveillance" (with David Goldberg, James Harding Elise Morrison, and Markus Wessendorf)
This preshow panel provides a larger political context for the devised theatre production Smile, You're Under Surveillance! (Kennedy Theatre, 7:30pm). David Goldberg (American Studies/UHM), James Harding (Theatre, Dance & Performance Studies/University of Maryland), Elise Morrison (Performance Studies/Texas A&M), and Markus Wessendorf (Theatre & Dance/UHM) will discuss strategies of resistance for performance and activism to not be outperformed by the increasingly sophisticated technologies of surveillance.
