Aloha Theatre will hold open auditions for volunteer performers for "Disney's Beauty and the Beast" on its stage Tuesday, December 12, and Wednesday, December 13, at 6:00 p.m.  A possible invitational call-back audition may be held on Thursday, December 14, also at 6:00 p.m., if necessary.  No previous theatre experience is necessary, and newcomers are welcome.  Performers of all races and ethnicities are encouraged to audition. Jerry Tracy will direct, assisted by Marie-anne Rouse.  Music director is Bernaldo Evangelista, vocal and choral director is Marinella Savarese, and choreographer is Amanda Trusty.

All roles are open, and include Belle, the Beast, Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, Gaston, LeFou, Chip,  Babette, Madame de la Grande Bouche, Maurice, Monsieur D'Arque, and the Silly Girls.  In addition, a strong singing, dancing, and acting ensemble of approximately 12 multi-talented people is required.  This ensemble will play various characters, including wolves, villagers, cronies, mob members, dinnerware, serving implements and other household items.

Scores and libretti are available for perusal at the Aloha Theatre office, by arrangement with Operations Coordinator Tiffany Kutsunai.  Each person auditioning must prepare 16 bars, or about one minute, of a song.  Sheet music will be available for songs from "Beauty and the Beast," and an accompanist will be provided.  If a song from another source is chosen, the candidate must provide the accompanist with sheet music in the proper key.  No a capella or karaoke style auditions will be permitted.  In addition to the singing part of the audition, candidates will be asked to read, choosing from a list of speeches provided, as well as learn a short movement routine in a group.  Sturdy, closed toe shoes are required.  Slippers will not be allowed.  Candidates will be seen in small groups, in order of arrival.  Attendance at one of the audition nights is sufficient; attending both nights is not necessary.

Regular rehearsals will begin Tuesday, December 26, and will generally be conducted on Sunday afternoons and Monday through Thursday evenings.  Soloists may be asked to rehearse before the 26th, if available.  The specific time commitment varies, depending on the role.  The show runs for five weekends, performing on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons, February 9 through March 11, 2018.  Although all cast members will not be required at every rehearsal, candidates must be available for the entire rehearsal schedule with a minimum number of conflicts, and must commit to the entire performance run.  The complete rehearsal and performance calendar is available on the theatre's website, AlohaTheatre.com, and will also be posted at auditions.  In addition to performers, support staff is also sought, including stage hands,  hair, makeup, and wardrobe helpers, seamstresses, builders, painters, concession workers, and ushers.  Those interested in any of these volunteer positions are encouraged to attend auditions to fill out a registration form, or to reach out to tiffanyk@alohatheatre.com.

"Disney's Beauty and the Beast" is a tale as old as time, the 1994 Broadway musical phenomenon based on the 1991 animated Disney movie.  Book is by Linda Woolverton, music by Alan Menken, and lyrics are by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice.  Aloha Theatre is located 8 miles south of Kailua-Kona on Highway 11, in the village of Kainaliu.  For more information, call 322-9924.
