Leeward Theatre Po’okela Winners!

Leeward Theatre Po’okela Winners!

Congratulations to Leeward Students, Faculty, and Alumni for 2016 HSTC Po‘okela Wins!

It’s been a great season for Leeward Theatre students, faculty, and alumni! Despite having a reduced 41st Season – and having to pack up and move out of the facility for upcoming refurbishments and repairs to the building – the students and staff here are still doing some top quality work! These Po‘okela wins, in addition to being recognized by Star-Advertiser readers as the 2nd best theatre in the state for Live Theatre, really help to showcase the bold and exciting work being done at The Leeward Theatre.

Any accolades we receive at the Theatre happen in part because of all the hard work the dance, music, and theatre instructors in the Arts & Humanities have put in. A large part of the programming we produce comes directly from them and their students. This is a testament to the talented teachers and learners we have here on campus.

Congratulations to everyone involved!

About The Poʻokela Awards

The Poʻokela Awards have recognized excellence in local theater since 1984. Under the Poʻokela Awards adjudication process, a panel of three adjudicators selects honorees in twenty-three different theatre arts categories spanning producing, directing, performing, design, and technical theatre.  Awards are given for excellence in each category.  The adjudicators may also recognize excellence outside these categories through discretionary awards.

About The Hawaiʻi State Theatre Council

About The Leeward Theatre:

Our ultimate goal here at The Leeward Theatre is to build community through live performance. The more of our community that is allowed to access our events the more likely it is for young people and other individuals to take action to improve their community. Creativity is life affirming – no matter the quality or value of what was created. It is a step toward life; toward adding something to the world that did not exist before. The Leeward Theatre exists as a place where creativity is practiced on a daily basis – where students, community members, and trained artists can engage with and empower one another. This is not just a building on a college campus – it is living breathing extension of the community. It is a place that has the power to inspire, the power to enlighten, and the power to educate.

The Leeward Theatre is about to undergo a major renovation thanks to the generous support of the Legislature, the Governor, and the University of Hawaii. Although we have a reduced season, we’re not completely dark. Come check out the fantastic offerings we have for our 42ND Season!
