HTY Premieres Celebrated Tasmanian Playwight's 'You and Me and the Space Between'
HTY’s U.S. Premiere of ‘You and Me and the Space Between’
is Latest Work by Australia’s Finest Playwright for Children
HONOLULU (December 22, 2016)—Honolulu Theatre for Youth and Australia’s Terrapin Puppet Theatre have co-commissioned an inventive work by one of Oz’s finest playwrights for children. Finegan Kruckemeyer’s You and Me and the SPACE BETWEEN is part play, part picture book and all wondrous fun—a magical story of an adventurous girl who lives on a tiny island that’s sinking into the sea.
You and Me and the SPACE BETWEEN opens Friday, January 13, 2017 at 7 p.m., then plays Saturdays, January 14, 21, 28 and February 4 at 4:30 p.m. A sensory-friendly/ASL-interpreted performance will be staged Sat., Feb. 4 at 11 a.m.
Director Eric Johnson said HTY was inspired to co-commission the play as part of its 2016-17 season, which is themed “Stories of Home,” as a way to spark discussion on the impact of global warming on island nations. Playwright Kruckemeyer is a resident of Tasmania, an island community similar to Hawaii in that it has a relationship to a “mainland” culture (Australia) as we do with the mainland U.S. The play poses the question, “What happens when an island springs a leak and can no longer float on the open sea?” Johnson added, “It’s an extraordinarily thoughtful and poetic tale that asks pressing questions about what might happen when an island’s people are forced to change, and tells the story of one girl’s heroic journey to save her people’s lives and spirits.”
You and Me and the SPACE BETWEEN will be performed at Tenney Theatre on the grounds of The Cathedral of St. Andrew. It is ideal for ages 8 and up. Single tickets are $20 for adults, and $10 for youth (18 and under) and $15 for seniors (over 60).
