Tartuffe open the 42nd Season here at The Leeward Theatre!

The Leeward Theatre is proud to announce the first production of our 42nd Season: Tartuffe by Molière, translated from the original French by Richard Wilbur. Leeward faculty member and award winning local director Betty Burdick will be directing the production in the new Leeward Theatre Alternate Space (formerly the orchestra classroom AM-101).

Tartuffe was written and first performed privately for King Louis XIV in 1664. Richard Wilbur’s 1963 English verse translation maintains both the clever barbs and searing social commentary of the original. Molière, like Shakespeare, uses wit and word play like a weapon, skewering his unsuspecting victims and the audience at once. This quintessential sitcom by the father of farce is the perfect vehicle to kick off Your Leeward Theatre’s 42nd Season.

Burdick’s striking vision for the piece sets the play in a parallel universe for 2016, in a kingdom very like Waikiki, ruled by the descendants of the Ali’i.

Orgon lives on an estate much like the Royal Hawaiian Hotel with his family, and has decided to give all his worldly possessions to a pious holy man named Tartuffe - including his daughter Mariane. However, this holy man is not all that he seems to be, and Orgon’s frantic family and friends are not fooled by Tartuffe’s behavior.

Orgon’s young wife, Elmire, and his sassy maid, Dorine, are determined that Orgon will see Tartuffe for the imposter he is, and that Mariane will be able to wed Valere, the love of her life.  Will their plans succeed?

Hijinks and physical comedy ensue as they hatch a plan to catch the rat before he brings the house down.
